Seattle MAC - Ice Climbing Trip - Alpental Ski Area

The "graduation" ice climb of the mixed/ice climbing series. Pan Dome Falls is within the Mt Baker Ski area and is accessible when the lifts there are running. This is an advanced trip with prerequisites. See leader's notes for details.

This is an advanced trip. Prerequisites:

  • Confidence and ample experience leading at least 5.9 sport.
  • Experience glacier climbing and familiarity with ice axe use, as a base for learning to use ice tools
  • Ability to handle poor conditions - adequate layers & experience to stay warm in freezing/wet weather

  • layering system for approach snowshoe/ski, climbing, and standing and belaying.
    • mid-weight wool/synthetic base layer, ski socks are nice
    • insulating mid layer like fleece or midweight synthetic down
    • water proof/water resistant pants/bottoms outer layer
    • waterproof coat/top outer layer
    • heavy duty outer insulating layer / puffy / parka
    • at least 2x gloves 1 for approach/climbing, 1 heavy for belaying
    • beanie/buff/ear warmers/hat, some combination
  • sun pro/eye wear
    • sun glasses
    • hat
    • sunscreen
    • lip balm
  • hardware
    • snowshoes or skis/skins/poles for spproach
    • ice tools / crampons (available to borrow from M's)
    • climbing stuff - harness, helmet, belay device, PAS, prusik, extra locker/non locker
  • footwear
    • boots that you have confirmed are crampon compatible 
    • if ski touring in, ski boots
  • accessories
    • hand warmers
    • toe warmers
    • optional foam sit pad to stand on while waiting/belaying
