Exact location TBA nearer the date depending on the instructor but this leader development clinic will take place in the Deception Pass/Anacortes area.

Plan on staying in the Anacortes area, we expect most will camp at the State Park.

We are partnering with Body Boat Blade to offer a this clinic to develop leadership ability. The class will focus on trip leadership and what do when things go wrong and be instructed by Alex LaLonde owner of Body Boat Blade. There will be some personal skill training as needed, however we anticipate that anyone with trip leader level skills would be OK. Please reach out to the leader if you have any questions regarding skill levels.

We are looking for 

  • 4 current or candidate leaders who feel ready to expand their trip leadership capacity.
  • 2 experienced leaders who would like to develop an Incident Management class 

The cost will be free to Seattle leaders as part of the leader development funds we received from the club.  Seattle Leaders will be given priority.

Because the class is free, we are asking that participants commit to giving back to the program:

  • Lead 3 trips in 2022 and 2023.
  • The experienced leaders to develop an Incident Management course, run it in the fall of 2022 and spring of 2023, and transfer instruction to others through mentoring and documentation.

Participation in this class is through application.  To apply, pease send an e-mail to the class leader, providing the following information.  

Application

  • Are you willing to make the commitment to lead 3 trips a year for the next two years?  
  • Please briefly summarize your volunteer work in the paddling community, in the mountaineers in other ways, and in other organizations.
  • Please summarize your relevant leadership experience, both in kayaking, in other outdoor activities that require awareness of environment and management of risk, and in any activity that involves inspiring a group of people toward a goal.
  • Please list the skills you hope to learn in order to advance your capacity as a sea kayak trip leader.

If applying as leader who will develop an Incident Management course:

  • Are you willing to commit to running an Incident Management class in the fall of 2022 and again in the spring or summer of 2023?  
  • Please briefly summarize your experience teaching kayaking skills.

All applicants will be added to a waitlist and selected on Friday 21st Jan.
