This clinic is an introduction to preventing and managing unexpected incidents that happen on a paddle. It is a combination of instruction and practice on the beach and in the water. This meets the requirement of the intermediate badge.

We will MEET at 9:00 am at the shelter building next to the Bowman Bay boat launch in Deception Pass State Park. The day starts with several hour talk before launching. Dress warm as we will spend time in the water with scenarios. Will be off the water around 3:30pm. A Discover Pass is required.
This clinic is reserved for participants of the Paddle and Camp weekend at Deception Pass.
Please bring helmet (bike helmet acceptable), 30-50' long tow AND a 4-8' short tow (aka, contact tow) for rescue practice. Also be sure to bring all of your normal emergency gear, since we will be sharing and discussing what we have in our emergency kits.
Clinic will cover:
- Risk assessment and incident preventions,
- Most common incidents, and how to manage them,
- Multiple on water scenarios involving self and assisted re-entries,
- Use of short and long tow systems, and incident scenarios.
- Discussion of safety kits / equipment for different conditions (first aid, signaling, clothing, repair).
Intermediate Kayak Course (IKC) students have priority taking this clinic. Students that are enrolled in the Intermediate Kayak Course: remember to bring your logbook and to notify your leaders that you want to be evaluated BEFORE we get on the water.

Required Equipment
- Floatation in both ends of the kayak
- U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
- Paddle
- Spray skirt
- Bilge pump with floatation
- Self-rescue paddle float
- Waterproof whistle
- Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
- Dry suit
- Short tow
- Long tow
- Everything that you currently have to use for emergencies such as first aid kits, boat repair kits, vhf radio, inReach beacon, etc.
