If conditions are good we will be out at Hobuck Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to mid-day.  From there we will choose appropriate trips.  People can join as their schedule permits.

I'll travel out Friday and try to surf at some sites along the straight, such as Crescent, Twin, and some exploration of unknown sites.

The main intention of this trip is to surf waves at Hobuck.  It is an opportunity for people to come out, surf together, and develop skill through practice.  All levels of surf paddlers are invited but we don't plan formal, basic instruction.  You should have enough surf paddling ability to paddle out and in through moderate surf.
My goals, expectations, and style for this trip are:

Goals

  • Enjoy a weekend of paddling in the surf and coastal environment
  • Opportunity for everyone to improve skills through experience

Expectations

  • Participants have had some training paddling in the surf and can assess their own ability and choose conditions that are appropriate for their skill
  • Some activities will be mountaineer activities.  Outside of that people have freedoms to engage in personal paddling/trips.
  • Leaders are clear about when they are leading a mountaineers activity and document it.
  • Participants are clear about when they are on a mountaineers activity and when they are on private activity
  • Mutually monitor each other during surfing and paddles to provide assistance when needed
  • Don’t take risks that your paddling partners are not comfortable with

Style

  • Relaxed weekend padding in surf on the coast
  • Focus on surfing at Hobuck beach and seek other destinations when that is not great.
  • Practice additional skills together
  • Develop trust in each other as paddling partners
Depending on conditions we may do a coastal paddle out of Hobuck or Neah Bay.  Each of these will be run as a mini trip with leader and selection of appropriate participants for the destination.
Since I’ve seen strong winds cut power to Hobuck several times and make roads difficult to drive I’ll cancel if such winds are forecast.
Cabins will be available to reserve for this time Starting Jan 1 (or so).
