Essential Sea Kayak Skills

Essential Sea Kayak Skills - Lake Washington: Concrete Beach

Develop kayak maneuver skiills, with balance, bracing and moving sideways.

  • Sea Kayak III
  • Moderate
  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 2 ft
  • Pace: 2.5 kts

Be geared up and ready by the 9 a.m. start time.  This is a 3-hour clinic.

In this clinic, we will explore use of lateral weight shift in the sea kayak.  Our narrow boats may go forward with ease, but that narrow hull puts our skills to the test when we get out of balance to one side or the other.  In this clinic, we'll remedy that with:

  • Practicing use of lateral weight shift
  • Learning the brace maneuvers and developing muscle memory for a brace reflex
  • Learning draws and sculling strokes to move sideways with maximum stability

  • Your long, narrow sea kayak
  • Your paddle
  • Anything else you need to stay warm, dry and hydrated for 3 hours outdoors.

Dates for  the other clinics:

  • Forward stroke - 1/7/23
  • Directional control - 1/21/23
  • Balance, bracing, sideways - this class
  • Rescues and tows - 2/18/23
  • Kayaking in current (Deception Pass) - TBA

Basic competence in these on the water skills will boost your confidence to paddle competently on a variety of trips. Each clinic will focus on one area of skills. You can take all sessions, or as many as you feel you need. These are introductory clinics, but all levels are welcome. You must be a Basic Sea Kayak student or graduate, or have club equivalency status. Proof of full vaccination will be required.
