Reality Rangers

Field trip: Paddler Development Weekend

Reality Rangers - Deception Pass

Reality Rangers - Navigation from the cockpit

  • Sea Kayak IV
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.0 nm

Bowman Bay. Meet at 8 am and launch at 9 am.

90% of navigation can be done using piloting, primarily ranges, lines of positions, and bearings.  In waters with strong currents (San Juans, I’m looking at you) we use these tools to keep constant awareness of where we are and what the water is doing to us.  In this class we will provide extensive opportunity to practice using these. We'll do chart work & concept practice on land, then move to the water.  The venue will be Deception Pass with some moving water but we will not seek out the fastest water.  Participants must be comfortable paddling in moderate moving water.
