Blended Strokes for Dynamic Water

Field trip: Paddler Development Weekend

Blended Strokes for Dynamic Water - Deception Pass

Advance your basic strokes for use in dynamic water

  • Sea Kayak IV
  • Moderate

Meet at 8:30am at Cornet Bay

Sure, you learned the basics in Basic Class & strokes clinic(s), and you’ve had that Introduction to Moving Water course. Well this course takes it a step further. In currents, you’ll learn easier techniques to prevent the bow from being swept downstream; how to glide up to the next (upstream) eddy; prevent your boat from crashing into the wall behind the eddy. For wind, learn to maneuver your boat for challenging situations.

Participants should have some prior experience doing bow rudders, low brace turns, edging, and bracing.

We will work on specific techniques as follows:

  • For currents:
    • how to blend the sweep, stern draw stroke, and stern draw rudder to rocket your way upstream to the next eddy or straighten out your boat for a ferry glide
    • the low brace turn, but also the low BRAKE turn (to prevent crashing into the rocks)
    • high brace turn
    • controlled edging for eddy spins
    • rear ruddering and edging on standing waves
  • For wind:
    • An improved bow sweep method to turn you boat into the wind
    • Stern pry done RIGHT, with less loss of momentum
    • The skimming brace paddle recovery
    • Paddling backwards/edging/sweeping to get bow pointed downwind
    • Braced stern rudder for downwind runs
    • Blended sweep/stern draw stroke/stern draw rudder for quartering downwind seas
