Coastal Kayak Surf Zone Basics

Course Overview: The Coastal Kayak Surf Zone course is designed to teach paddlers the necessary skills to safely launch and land a kayak in the surf. Conditions should include small waves height less than 3 ft, ideally with spilling surf on a gently sloping beach clear of obstacles and swimmers. Winds should not exceed 15 knots. Rating: SK-IV. Location will be Hobuck Beach, Makah Bay: http://www.fluidmoves.org/venues/hobuck-beach. This particular course offering will consist of two 4-hour sessions: 10-2 on Sat. and 10-2 on Sun.

Required Equipment

Notes: Bring "Mountaineer essentials" and "Sea kayaking essentials", plus helmet (required), noseplugs (optional), earplugs (optional), etc. Dressing for immersion is required: either drysuit (recommended) or wetsuit/drytop, or full-length ("steamer") wetsuit will be acceptable. Also bring camping gear/supplies for camping at Hobuck Beach Campground and be ready to pay camping fee of $20 per night/tent to the campground office. You will also need to obtain and display a Recreational Permit while on the Makah Reservation.  You can purchase the Rec Permit at Hobucks or at many stores in Neah Bay for $10--it's good for the entire calendar year.
