Sailing Course

Introduction to Sailboat Racing

Completion of course puts you in a position to be a useful and helpful member of a sailboat racing crew!

  • Builds on the skills learned in the Mountaineers Basic Crewing/Sailing Course.
  • Be able to function as a valued crew member during a sailboat race.
  • Learn about all three sails typically used in sailboat racing: Main, Genoa, and Spinnaker.
  • Learn about the Racing Rules of Sailing, and how they apply during a race.
  • Sail better, sail safer, sail more, enjoy sailing more, enjoy competition.
  • Be prepared to assist in preparation for a race, both before the race and on the boat.
  • Have a more in-depth understanding of sail trim and boat speed.
  • Gain a basic understanding of upwind sailing, downwind sailing, and downwind sails.
  • Understand basic personal gear requirements and safety practices encountered during races held in the Puget Sound area.
  • Have a basic understanding of racing tactics and strategy, and how to apply them during a race.Have a basic understanding of the anatomy of a sailboat race, from prestart to finish.
  • Learn what needs to be done at mark roundings; before, during, and after.
  • Learn about sail changes done while under sail.

Required Equipment
  • Attendance at two classroom sessions; June 14 and  June 21, at the Seattle Mountaineers Program Center.
  • Attendance at one On-the-Water fun Race/Sail session at a time determined in mid-summer 2018.
