The day starts with an hour-long session of hands-on practice using the map and compass in combination. This takes place at a practice site next to the Discovery Park visitor center classroom. Next we move into the classroom for two hours of in-depth review of navigational principles. This includes hands-on practice with map and compass guided by a Q+A problem set, which is accompanied by highly detailed illustrations shown on two large TV screens. Each group of 6 students then completes the day by navigating their own unique route through Discovery Park during the 4 hour afternoon session. Plan on finishing between 3:30–4pm.
Before you can sign up for Activity #2, you need to first sign up and pay for the Off-Trail Navigation Course and schedule the prerequisite Activities 1A and 1B, which must be completed successfully. Instructors do not need to pay for the course.
