To sign up:
Before you can sign up for this Online Map and Compass Activity, you first need to sign up and pay for the "Wilderness Navigation Course " (Course Page link at right). Please prepare in advance by purchasing your Compass. Instructors do not need to pay.
The Online Map and Compass Activities provide the foundation for the Activities that follow.
Activity 1A on average takes approximately 4 to 5 hours to complete, (not including any assigned reading time). You are allotted eleven days to finish this activity. Activity 1A must be completed prior to Activity 1B. It is required to complete the course, and is not an optional component. If you cannot finish in this time, you must roll over to a later course.
On the Activity start date, you'll receive an email with a link to the CoAssemble Learning Platform. A volunteer instructor will be assigned to help you, to answer questions, etc. You must complete at least 87% of the online Activities to be deemed complete. The computer system requirements are listed in the Course Materials tab of the Course Page.
Required Equipment
Note: We no longer require you to purchase the USGS 1:24000 Baring map.
Compass: See the Required Equipment tab on the main Course Page. You will need an approved compass. Only specific compasses will be accepted, so before purchasing a compass make sure to read our compass requirements. Hint: the Suunto MC-2 USGS is highly recommended.
Rescheduling or Cancellation:
We treat this activity the same as any kind of in-person activity. If you don't begin, you'll be marked as a no-show. If you don't finish, you'll be marked as unsuccessful.
Instructors:
Your main role will be to answer questions and "mark" or grade certain modules. The Activity leader also sets up student logins within the CoAssemble Learning Platform, tracks student's progress, and manages completion.
