Summit Room, Seattle Program Center 6:30 to 8:30 PM. First hour indoors.  Second hour outside in Magnuson Park.

Get a jump start on using your GPS! This class is intended for new users of a dedicated GPS or a new Smart Phone GPS App (Gaia or Backcountry Navigator Pro). You will brush up on the basics of GPS, better understand the principles behind GPS, and get practical experience using your GPS or Smart Phone app. Skills will include loading a map, entering waypoints, determining current position, starting a track, saving waypoints and navigating to a waypoint. Topics of discussion include GPS navigation functions, hardware considerations, disciplined procedures, and integrating GPS with map & compass tools.

We're targeting Mountaineers who have completed the Basic Navigation Course who have either:

  • An iPhone with the Gaia GPS app, OR
  • An Android smart phone with Backcountry Navigator Pro or Gaia, OR
  • A dedicated Garmin (Etrex, Oregon, Monterra, GPS Map or Montana)

There will be an indoor hands-on workshop followed by outdoor exercises in nearby Magnuson Park.
