Navigation Activity #4 of 4 - Field Trip - Heybrook Lookout & Ridge

Before you can sign up for this Field Trip as a student, you need to first sign up and pay for the Basic Navigation Course and complete a Navigation Workshop (in-person or online). Instructors do not need to pay.  

Field Trip Details:
This is a full day event which takes place on a Saturday or Sunday in the mountains on Heybrook Ridge near the town of Index, WA. Carpooling is strongly encouraged because we'll be parking on private land with very limited space, so please specify your carpool preferences in your personal profile. You can view other students' carpool preferences by viewing the roster on the field trip activity page. (The activity page can be found after sign-up under "My Activities" when you click your name on the Mountaineers website).

Checklist...

1. You'll need to be in reasonable physical condition since you'll be gaining about 1800 ft of elevation (roughly half the elevation for Mount Si) and hiking 6.4 miles with 1.25 miles being off trail. 
2. Come prepared as you would for a scramble or dayhike in varied weather, but please leave the technical gear (helmet, ice axe, etc) at home. Bring over-the-ankle high-top boots, a waterproof outer layer, warm clothes in layers, the 10 essentials, lunch, etc. You'll find out more things to bring when you attend the Workshop. 
3. Bring the Field Trip packet.  This is in the Course Materials tab of the Course listing. The In-Person workshop students received one at the Workshop. The Online students can find it in the Course Materials tab of the course page, or within the Reference Materials section of the online website.  
4. Bring your compass. Unfortunately you can't share a compass with someone during the Field Trip.  
5. OPTIONAL: Bring a GPS and Altimeter, or Smartphone Apps of similar function.
6. Bring both of the maps you used in the Workshop (USGS Baring and Index). Unfortunately you can't share maps with someone during the Field Trip. Maybe fold your maps to the area where we'll be, and put each map into its own gallon ziplock bag. 
7. Bring a sharp pencil.
8. Complete the homework assignment.  For students in the Online Workshop, the pre-trip planning module serves as your homework assignment.  For students in the in-person workshop, the homework is at the front of the student field trip packet. Bring the completed hard copy to the field trip and turn it in to your instructor.

Instructors:
Come prepared to instruct students who likely have a wide range of experience. Some will have gone through the In-Person Workshop while others have gone through the Online Elearning Workshop:

1.  Bring your "Instructor Field Trip" packet.  If you haven't obtained one at a recent workshop, one will be emailed to you before the field trip.  We should also have paper copies at the field trip.  
2.  Review the "Student Field Trip" packet as well, particularly for driving directions. It will also be emailed to you before the trip, and is available in "Course Materials" on the course page.
3. Bring your compass, and also a GPS and Altimeter, or similar smartphone Apps, if you have them.
