Please prepare in advance by purchasing your Compass, Maps, and Book as described on the Course Page (link to the course page is to the right).

This is the first of four components, and must be completed prior to the third activity, the In-Person Workshop.  It is required to complete the course, and is not an optional component. There are no prerequisites.

You are allotted 2 weeks to finish this activity. If you cannot finish in that time, the next sessions will be offered in December 2021.

ONLINE WORKSHOP:

The online Map and Compass  is an online course that provides the foundation for the activities that follow. It is not optional and is not a substitute for other components.  Please consider your ability to work independently and  set aside the time you'll need to complete this course (It takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, not including the reading time.

On the start date, you'll receive an email with a link to the LITMOS Learning Management System (a separate system from Mountaineers.Org).  A volunteer instructor will be assigned to help you, to answer questions, etc.   You may work the modules in any order and  you must complete at least 87% of the online modules to be deemed complete.    The computer system requirements are listed in the Course Materials tab of the Course Page.

Compass and Maps:

See Required Equipment tab on the main Course Page. You need an approved compass and a USGS Baring map for this online workshop.  Only specific compasses will be accepted, so before purchasing a compass make sure to read our compass requirements.

Rescheduling or cancellation:

We treat this activity the same as any kind of in-person activity.  If you don't begin, you'll be marked as a no-show.  If you don't finish, you'll be marked as unsuccessful. Please plan your activities so you can dedicate your Online time within your allotted two-week period.

You can make changes on your own, prior to the registration close dates, or you can contact the course leader or member services to cancel or change.

INSTRUCTORS:

Your main role will be to answer questions and "mark" or grade certain modules. The activity leader also sets up student logins within the LITMOS Learning Management System, tracks student's progress, and manages completion.
