GPS Navigation: Using CalTopo and Gaia GPS

2018 Smart Phone & Dedicated GPS - Seattle

This one night (entry level) workshop at the Seattle Program Center covers the use of GPS with GaiaGPS on a smartphone.  The concepts covered will also apply to dedicated devices, but you will have to translate these to your device. The workshop runs from 6:30 to around 9:30 and includes both an indoor presentation and outdoor exercises. 

The indoor presentation (about 1 hour) includes an overview of GPS and other mapping tools, along with covering accuracy issues and solutions. Trip planning with online tools (CalTopo) is also covered.  The outdoor exercises will make use of your device by navigating in the program center area( setting waypoints, recording tracks, creating routes, navigating to a location, etc.).

Students need to bring their own smartphone with GaiaGPS installed.  A laptop computer will also be required for the trip planning exercises. Instructors are prepared to help with a limited range of devices.  Approved devices include:

  • An iPhone with the Gaia GPS app (professional version is not required)
  • An Android smart phone with Gaia.

A GPS enabled device:

1. Smartphone with a GPS application.  For IOS smartphones, Gaia Standard or Gaia Classic.  For Android smartphones, Gaia GPS

 

Digital map of the program center area pre-loaded into your device prior to class.

Headlamp for the outdoor exercises.

Appropriate clothing for the weather. The workshops have outdoor exercises.

Laptop computer with internet connectivity (via the Mountaineers WiFi) for the trip planning portion using CalTopo.
