COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.
  • Moderate
  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)
  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,100 ft

We will meet at 9:00AM at the Sunrise Visitor Center at the far end of the parking lot. This early start is necessary to avoid the long line of cars entering the Park later. Be aware that the entrance fee to the Park is $25 per car if you don't already have a pass. Problematic weather -snow, hail, heavy rain cancels - leader will notify you.

If you have never been to Sunrise, this area will astonish you. It is a true Alpine zone with stunning views of Rainier and possible mountain goat sightings.

Actual destination is dependent on snow level and group fitness. Although this is considered an easy/moderate hike, we may be covering up to eight miles and 1000' elevation gain, so please plan accordingly.

Trekking poles for balance would be very helpful. There may be patches of snow- traction devices may be useful if you have them (microspikes) but not absolutely necessary. Sun protection is vital.

We may be spending up to six or seven hours at a slow/moderate pace on this outing. Please do not plan to attend events that would cause you to rush home in the evening.

There will be opportunities to filter water for hydration  (I will be bringing a filter to lend) but try to bring enough to last you through the day (3 liters).
