Field Trip 1 - Seattle Naturalists Intro Natural World Course - Shady Lane & Staircase Rapids

Staircase Rapids Loop. This field trip will last 3 to 4 hours and will give you the chance to practice using your charts, tree & flower apps, and field guide to identify flowers, trees, and ferns as well as other plants and animals of the Coastal Forest Life Zone.

We will meet in front of the Staircase Ranger Station at 10AM. 

This field trip will last three to four hours and will give you the chance to practice using your charts, tree & flower apps, and field guide to identify flowers, trees,  and ferns as well as other plants and animals of the Coastal Forest Life Zone.

We hope to find some of these and may concentrate on only 30 to 40 common species in our particular place.

Trees: Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, Red Cedar, Lodgepole Pine, Grand Fir, Yew, Red Alder, Big-leaf Maple, Vine Maple, Black cottonwood, Madrone

Shrubs: Oregon Grape, Hazelnut, Red Elderberry, Common Snowberry,  Salal, Evergreen huckleberry, red huckleberry, Indian Plum, Thimbleberry, Salmonberry, Wild Blackberry, Red-flowering Current

Ferns: Lady Fern, Deer Fern, Spreading Wood-fern, Licorice Fern, Sword Fern, Bracken Fern

Flowers: Bleeding Heart, Stinky Bob, Pacific Waterleaf, Calypso Orchid, False Solomon's Seal, White trillium, EarlyYellow Wood Violet, Siberian Miner's Lettuce, Large-leaved Avens, Cleavers/Bedstraw

Bring your smartphone or tablet with Washington Wildflower Search, PNW Trees apps. Bring the charts for trees, ferns, and flower families. Bring a guide book if you want. A small magnifying glass, or binoculars can be useful for flower observations.
