New Hike Leader Seminar - Mountaineers Seattle Program Center

This 2.5 hour evening seminar provides experienced hikers information to help them become an effective hike leader for the Mountaineers. Participation in Mountaineers day hikes and/or other activities is a pre-requisite for taking the seminar. This seminar is not appropriate for new members who have not yet participated in any Mountaineers activities. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination required. This seminar is a prerequisite (along with a mentored hike and committee approval) to becoming an official hike leader for the club, and prospective leaders from any branch can get credit for this seminar toward their leader certification.

Seminar covers Mountaineers hiking classifications, posting hikes on the website, screening hike participants, responsibilities of hike leaders before, during, and after the hike; ensuring a safe and and enjoyable hike. There will be a lecture, small group work, and discussion of real-life scenarios encountered by hike leaders.

A collection of reference materials for use by new hike leaders is available on the Seattle Hiking Committee section of the Club website here.  Participants are encouraged to review these documents before the seminar.
