The seminar is a prerequisite to becoming an official day hike or backpack trip leader for the Mountaineers (secondary steps are a mentor hike or backpack and committee approval). Past and current hike leaders as well as those interested in becoming a new leader are invited to participate. Presented in an informal Q&A format, learn about hiking trip standards, recommended reading resources, outdoor leadership insights w/group breakouts, and the mentor leader program. We also review how to create a hike activity and complete activity reports on the club website. The workshop is free and open to all Mountaineers members who are interested in becoming trip leaders, but please signup online so we can anticipate group size. It is highly recommended to read the reference materials prior to attending the seminar (see required equipment below on how to access course materials).
Required Equipment
Participants are strongly encouraged to read and review the reading materials prior to the seminar in order to fully participate in group discussions. Go to My Profile, My Activities and click on the link for the hike leader seminar. On the right there should be a link to the hike leader course, click the link and find the blue course materials tab toward the middle of the page. If you have any trouble accessing/downloading the course materials please contact the leader.
