  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)

Come and stay anytime between 4:00 p.m. Friday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday -- hike, eat and sleep in between! Cougar Flat Campground is a newly rebuilt campground on the banks of the Bumping River. Take Highway 410 to milepost 88.4, then turn left on Bumping Lake Road and continue for 6 miles. The signed campground entrance will be on your left.

Fri.: Set up camp. Dinner on your own at camp or at Whistlin' Jack's Lodge in nearby Cliffdell. Sat.: CHS 1 is offering two hikes and CHS 2 has three, and there will be one Just for Fun hike. Back at camp, soak your feet and take a dip in the Bumping River. That evening, everyone is welcome back at the campground for the CHS Chili Cookoff! Sun.: There will be one CHS 1 and one CHS 2 hike, one Just for Fun hike, and one Just for Fun trail run. Possible ice cream meetup at Wapiti Woolies in Greenwater.

If you will be hiking only, please sign up as you normally would for a CHS hike, but note that campers will be given priority for the weekend’s hikes. If you will be camping, please register and pay for camping on Friday night, Saturday night, or both through the Mountaineers website. Spouses, partners, friends and children are welcome to camp, but must be Mountaineers members for liability purposes. (We can walk you through the process of signing them up for a free guest membership if they are not currently members.)

The cost is $25 per person per night. Carpooling is strongly encouraged, and riders should pay drivers twelve cents per mile.

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

Ten Essentials. Every trip. Every time.

In addition to your day hiking gear, bring typical car camping gear -- tent, sleeping bag, air or foam mattress, flashlight/headlamp, camp chair and potable water (recommend 1-1.5 gallons per person per day). There is a water pump on site, and the Bumping River is steps away if you're filtering. We have loaner gear available, but the earlier you can let us know what you might need, the better. There will be lots of group kitchen gear and snacks available. Lunches are on your own, and we provide Sat. & Sun. breakfasts and Sat. potluck dinner. Information on the potluck will come in a separate email.
