Field trip: Conditioning Hiking Series

CHS 2 Hike - Mount Constitution

CHS hike led at a CHS 2 pace (2.0-3.0 mph)

  • Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 11.0
  • Elevation Gain: 2,900 ft
  • Pace: 2.0+ mph

We will meet 5:20am on Saturday at the Green Lake Park and Ride North lot. We are planning on catching the 7:30am Anacortes Ferry to Orcas Island. We should be at the trailhead in Moran State Park on the Northeast side of Cascade Lake by 9:15am.

This hike has a little bit of everything. We will start the trek going up switchbacks through a little bit of old growth cedar and fir for the first 2.3 miles where we junction with the North Trail. We will continue straight ahead to the Cold Springs Gazebo.  Plan on stopping here for a few minutes to see the remnants of the Cold Spring before continuing on the trail towards the Mount Constitution Observation Tower.  We should have stunning views from here, weather permitting.  Plan on having lunch at the summit so we can soak up the scenery.  After lunch, we will continue our hike on the North Trail.  This section of the trail winds through beautiful old growth firs and cedars and junctions with the Cold Springs Trail.  We will then proceed down the  hill to the trailhead thus completing this lollipop loop.

The plan is to catch the 5:15pm ferry back to Anacortes so we will hike at a 2 plus miles per hour pace.  We will stop for a bite to eat in Anacortes.

Drivers need to bring a Discover Pass as we will park the vehicles in Moran State Park.

A generous subsidy will be provided to the drivers for their vehicle fare on the ferry.
