CHS 2 Hike - Enchanted Valley Chalet

Field trip: Conditioning Hiking Series

CHS 2 Hike - Enchanted Valley Chalet

Go Getter hike led at a CHS 2 pace (2.0-3.0 mph). Since the 1930s, the famed Enchanted Valley chalet has been a destination and safe haven for travelers in the Olympics. During World War II, the chalet served as an Aircraft Warning Station, and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the spring, numerous waterfalls flowing down into the valley from the peaks above make this area especially enchanting.

  • Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 26.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,500 ft

We will meet 6:00AM at the Quinault River Trail (East Fork) Trailhead

All participants are required to camp Friday night at the Graves Creek Campground or have lodging on the south side of Lake Quinault.  The Graves Creek Campground is a five minute walk to the trailhead.  Lodging on the south side of Lake Quinault requires the hikers to travel 35 to 40 minutes by car to the trailhead via the South Shore and Graves Creek Roads.  It is highly recommended the participants spend Saturday night after the hike at the campground or at lodging in the Lake Quinault area.  Hiking twelve to thirteen hours is extremely taxing on the body.  The hike should conclude between 6:30PM and 7:15PM.  Sunset is after 9:00PM.  You are invited to have dinner with the hike leaders at the Lake Quinault Lodge or nearby restaurant at the conclusion of the hike.

Please bring hiking poles and water shoes (going barefoot is OK too) in case we have to make any creek crossings due to bridges being out of commission.  I would also request that one or two individuals bring water filters.  I will bring a Sawyer filter and a SteriPen.  Having filters will allow us to carry less water and refill when necessary.  Please remember your ten essentials.  Insect repellant in your pack is recommended even though it should be early enough in the season to escape the little pests.

In past years we have come across herds of elk and deer so be sure to bring a camera or cell phone for any photo opportunities.  The area also contains a number of black bears.

You will also want to bring an extra pair of socks and one to two pairs of sock liners depending how much your feet sweat.  I will switch out my socks and liners no later than the half way point to prevent potential blisters.

We will be hiking at a 2.25-2.4 mile per hour pace.  We will take five minute breaks every hour with a 35 minute lunch break at the Enchanted Valley Chalet.

Please bring plenty of snacks and a high calorie lunch to keep your energy level up.
