Field trip: Conditioning Hiking Series

CHS 1 Hike - Van Trump Park

CHS hike led at a CHS 1 pace (1.5-2.0 mph)

  • Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,200 ft

There will be two meeting places for this hike:

  1. La Wis Wis Pay Station - 8:00 am
  2. Longmire Wilderness Information Center parking lot - 9:30

Due to the closure of the Stevens Canyon road, we will drive the US 12 detour route from La Wis Wis to Longmire. Google map here. The detour is only  couple of minutes longer time wise.

We may not make it to Van Trump Park due to snow on the trail. Plan is to go as far as we can safely.

Route: Please refer to the Caltopo map of our route, here. We'll take the Wonderland Trail (purple) from the Longmire Parking lot to the Comet Falls / Van Trump trail (dark blue) and hike up as far as we can. Mildred Pt. (orange) may be an option if conditions allow. Coming back we'll take Comet / Van Trump to Rampart Ridge to the parking lot. Milage should been the 10 mile range with 3,200' gain.

Maps: Every participant should have a hardcopy map; either Calliope map above or Green Trails, Mt. Rainier west - No 269. The Park service also provides a general map of the area, here. The Park Service map is an FYI. It does not satisfy hardcopy map requirement.

Equipment: Ten essentials required.  Micro spikes, gators and insect repellent highly recommended. The sun could be intense be prepared.

Trail Conditions: Please review Longmire trail conditions, here. We'll be taking Rampart and Upper Rampart.  Expect mosquitos/bugs. It's that time of year.

Weather: As of today (7/18), weather looks really good. Sunny, light winds with temps in the high 60's (at elevation)
