CHS 1 Hike - Mailbox Peak

Participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. CHS hike led at a CHS 1 pace (1.5-2.0 mph)

  • Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 4,822 ft
  • Pace: 1.5-2.0 mph
Meet at Mailbox Peak trailhead, near restroom in the upper lot, at 7:45am, boots on trail by 8:00am.  Trailhead is off of Exit 34, I-90.  Discover Pass required for vehicle.

At approx. 12.0 miles and 4,000 feet of elevation gain, this hike is in the lower mileage range for August  (12-14 miles) and above the August range for elevation gain (2,000 to 3,000 ft).  The lower miles and greater elevation gain translates to steeper terrain.  The last 1000ft of elevation gain is covered in 1/2 mile.  That’s approx. 2000ft of elevation gain/mile, which is STEEP.  We will be taking the new trail up, and down, which is gentler than the old trail.  Trekking poles are recommended.
If the weather is clear, we will be rewarded for our hard work with  expansive views of the Cascades, including Mt Rainier.  We’ll take some photos of the iconic mailbox and have lunch.
