Coastal Backpacking Field Trip - Olympic Coast South: The Wildcatter Coast

We need to meet at the Oil City TH in time to be ready to hike at 8am. This implies that we need to drop cars off at third beach trail head to set up our return shuttle before 8 AM. More details to follow

Field trip for the Coastal Backpacking Course.

In general we will hike south to north. Each day is around 6 miles, give or take a bit.

The 8am start time is to allow sufficient time to round Diamond Rock before the tide comes in. Some may choose to stay in the area the night before. 

Sept 9th we will camp at Mosquito Creek. This day will include a rope assisted accent of  the Hoh Head area. Consider bringing cheap leather gloves

Sept 10th we will camp at Toleak point. This day will possibly include fording Mosquito creek, Goodman Creek, and Falls creek. Consider bring some fording shoes.

Sept 11th we will exit our trip via the La Push 3rd Beach trailhead. This day will include a rope assisted asscent and decent. At 3rd beach we may choose to wade in the tide, instead of wait for the tide to go out, to get around the tidal restriction. 

There will be several stops to discuss various Costal Backpacking topics.

There will also be photography stops

Please remember your rain gear and pack cover. It is possible that you may have the opportunity to experience marine air.

This trip requires a shuttle between the 3rd Beach exit trail head and the Oil City entrance trail head. I have noticed that some carpools have requested carpoolers take a covid test, so please anticipate that that may be a possibility.

The permit cost is $17 per person. Please note that the leader does not do electronic money transfers, please bring $17 cash. Or alternatively provide your annual Olympic wilderness pass number. Thank you.
