9:00 AM--Saturday Morning In Darrington, WA .  We will caravan together the 30 additional miles to the TH some on paved and some on gravel/dirt roads. A Northwest Forest Pass  or America the Beautiful Pass in required for each car.

We will follow all Mountaineers Protocols regarding Covid-19.  All students must bring a cloth facemask and hand sanitizer.  The mask must be worn when within 6' of others at the trailhead, passing on the trail, at breaks or at the campsite.  We will not be sharing equipment.  Please carpool only with those from your household.

This will be an easy-going trip. We will stop as needed to enjoy the Old-Growth forest and raging river as well as to adjust clothing and take rests.  It is 6.5 miles to the camp.  While the trail is along the north side of the river it will go up and down some, gaining over 1200' in elevation.  For a new backpacker, I would call this a moderately difficult trip.  It will likely take about 4 hours to get to the camp.  After set up, we may take an optional side trip down to the river.  I foresee a big fire and much fun Saturday night.  On Sunday morning, if folks are game, we can take a longer bonus trip w/o our packs further up the river to explore, before packing up to head out.  Full rain gear will be required if rain threatens.  Instructor will gladly help with all manner of backpacking issues.   It will be a great learning time for us all. About Basic Backpacking Field Trips

The Basic Backpacking Field Trip, or "student backpack", is the final scheduled activity of the Basic Backpacking Course.   For most students it will be their first overnight trip in the backcountry.  Student backpacks are usually single-night trips along Easy or Moderate routes that do not present any unusual technical challenges.
