Trip Leaders

We are always looking for more people to lead day hikes and backpacks with us! If you are interested, check out the requirements below and get in touch with

There are three basic steps to becoming a trip leader:

-First, prospective leaders must be familiar with how Mountaineers trips function, and have competency traveling in a wilderness setting. There are no strict requirements for this, but the more trips you have been on with the Mountaineers the better, 5 or more is preferred.

-Attend a Hike/Backpack Leader Workshop. This is one evening at the Seattle Program Center and will cover leading a trip from start to finish. Topics include: route selection, listing your hike on the Mountaineers website, communicating with participants, group dynamics, and group management. It will also cover some of the organizational structure of The Mountaineers and Board Policies that apply to hikes and backpacks.

-Lead a Mentored Hike. This serves as your practice run at leading a trip. Working with an experienced leader as a mentor, you run a trip from start to finish. Your mentor is there to help out with any questions you may have during the process.
