Climb Leader Application

Instructions

Before applying, be sure to read the following information:

Climbing leadership roles vary based on skill, experience, and personal preference. If you are not familiar with our Climbing Leadership Structure, please visit this page to learn more before applying. All prospective leaders must be familiar with the leader role they are applying for, the climbing standards, and must have met the requirements to become a leader. 

All applicants must have the following:
- Completion a Navigation course
- Completion a Wilderness First Aid course
- Completion of the "Foundations of Leadership" eLearning course:
- Completion of at least (1) 2 hour minimum Outdoor Leadership program

If you have not completed the following you will not be able to submit your application. 

Applications will be reviewed by the branch climbing committee in which you are affiliated, and that committee will contact you for the next step in the process. Under special circumstances, applicants with equivalent experience from outside The Mountaineers who are not enrolled in the intermediate climbing course  may be considered if their skills and experience are extraordinary and the branch climbing committee deems them ready for this leadership role. Typically such applicants already have a relationship and have discussed their leadership with their preferred branch climbing committee.

5. What Climb Leader Role are you applying for?

Some applicants may apply for multiple leader badges at one time. Common instances of this are as follows:
  • Frontcountry Leader roles
  • Rock and Glacier rope Lead
  • Peer Rock and Peer Glacier Leader

7. Have you completed Wilderness Navigation?

If your course was completed outside of The Mountaineers, you will need to upload documentation of completion.  *This question is required.

11. To apply to be a Snow Climb Conditioning Leader, Glacier Rope Leader, Peer Glacier Leader, Glacier Leader, or a Climb Leader you must have at a Avalanche Level 1 or greater certification. You will not be able to complete an application for these leader roles without this certification. 

Have you completed an Avalanche Level 1 course or better? *This question is required.
11. Please upload a copy of your completed Avalanche Level 1 course if outside of The Mountaineers. *This question is required.
11. Please upload a resume of your outdoor experience.

Be sure to include any experience relevant to this role. Additionally, you are encouraged to include any other outdoor and/or leadership experience you may have. The resume should contain trips you've done, courses you've taken, and activities you have participated in as a leader. This resume will help the climbing committee review your overall experience and readiness to be in this role.
