Course Description

The 2015 Mountaineers Sport Climbing Class will take you through a 10 week journey to improve your climbing technique, give you the mental edge to become a confident lead climber on outdoor bolted sport routes, and climb better than ever before!

The course covers efficient climbing footwork and drills, physical conditioning, mental training, and advanced belaying and falling skills.  The course will also cover creating top-rope and multi-pitch anchors, and skills for climbing and rappelling multi-pitch sport routes.

Participants train together as a team during the course, which includes group instruction, meetups at local climbing gyms, and outdoor climbing trips, culminating with a trip to Smith Rock, OR.

This course is best suited for Intermediate Students who are looking to become stronger climbers, and for individuals interested in outdoor leading climbing on single and multi-pitch routes.  Climbers can take choose to take their skills further with the Crag Climbing course in Spring 2015.

Leader permission required. Course Prerequisites:

  • Climbers must be able to confidently climb 5.9 in the gym. 
  • Must have a top-rope belay card from Vertical World or Stone Gardens.
  • Leading is not required to start, but participants are required to obtain their lead belay certification at Stone Gardens or Vertical World by early March 2015.

Required Equipment

At Start of Course:  

At the first lecture students will be required to have the following equipment.  Our first meeting will be interactive, including both lecture and climbing.

  • Rock shoes
  • Climbing helmet
  • Harness
  • Belay Device – Black Diamond ATC, Petzl Reverso or similar.  Petzl GriGri2 optional

Additional Required Equipment

By the end of Feb 2015, students will be required to have the following additional equipment:

  • 60m / 70m rope
  • Minimum 6 quickdraws, 12 preferred
  • 4 locking carabiners
