Introduction to Multi-Pitch Trad A

Introduction to climbing in a multi pitch environment.

Applications and registration open to intermediate climbing students only starting July 1 (opens to public July 10).

This course is designed to teach the skills required to climb entry level multi-pitch trad routes. Students will be given time and education to safely and efficiently lead multi-pitch climbs and build solid gear anchors.  Students must be comfortable leading 5.6-5.8  single pitch trad routes in order to apply.

Skills Covered

  • Building of 3-point gear anchors in 2 mins. or less

  • Belaying a follower from the top with an auto-blocking device

  • Swapping leads

  • Being efficient on climbs including proper rope management

  • Basic rescue techniques

  • Understanding route selection

Graduation Criteria

  • Safely lead 1 multi-pitch trad route

Prerequisites

  • Single-pitch trad course or equivalent

  • Basic skills to climb cracks 

  • Ability to build a top-rope anchor on bolts

  • Ability to rappel safely

  • Ability to lead on trad routes up to 5.6

Summary of Activities

  • 1 evening kickoff session

  • 2 evenings for skills review

  • 2 weekend days of outdoor multi-pitch mock leading on trad gear

  • 1 weekend day of outdoor multi-pitch leading on trad gear (pick either Saturday or Sunday)

  • full set of nuts
  • helmet
  • harness
  • rock shoes
  • 2 personal anchors
  • 6 24 inch alpine slings with 2 wire gate biners per sling
  • 3 locking biners
  • auto blocking belay device, ei petzle reverso, BD ATC Guide, mega jel
  • nut tool
  • 20 feet cordalette, 6M nylon, 5M tech cord or spectra
Optional:
  • smaller Camelots optional; BDC3's, or any other brand  
  • chalk bag
