Please note that attendance at all 2018 Intermediate Glacier Travel lectures is required for participation in this field trip. AIARE 1 is also a prerequisite.

Skills covered to include:

  • Avalanche Skills including weather and avalanche forecast assessment, route-finding in avalanche terrain, avalanche accident response and search techniques

  • Review of snow and glacier travel skills (including glissading, self-belay and self-arrest), and how to teach these skills.

  • Snow anchor construction and evaluation including pickets, bollards, and deadman.

  • Belaying on snow (running and fixed belays)

  • Travel in mixed terrain (rock & snow) with crampons and ice axe

  • Building snow shelters (emergency and planned). I really love snow caves. While no longer required, I highly encourage anybody that wants to build one to do so. I will be sending additional information on various snow shelters in advance of the field trip for you to plan. Tents will also be considered acceptable alongside some light hearted ridicule.
