Small/Mentor Group Intermediate Winter Mountaineering Field Trip for Nick & Brian's Mentor Group.  If space is still available, we will accept other students after March 1st.  

This trip will cover skills needed to climb and travel safely in the backcountry in winter conditions, as well as "winter-y" conditions encountered in the alpine year-round. 

Skills covered to include:

  • Avalanche Skills including weather and avalanche forecast assessment, route-finding in avalanche terrain, avalanche accident response and search techniques

  • Review of snow and glacier travel skills (including glissading, self-belay and self-arrest), and how to teach these skills.

  • Snow anchor construction and evaluation including pickets, bollards, and deadman.

  • Belaying on snow (running and fixed belays)

  • Travel in mixed terrain (rock & snow) with crampons and ice ax

  • Building snow shelters (emergency and planned)
