Basic Glacier Travel Course

THIS COURSE IS FULL WITH A WAITLIST. WE ARE NOT TAKING ANY MORE APPLICANTS. Learn glacier skills which will allow you to be a member of a rope team on a Basic Glacier climb. Complete Covid-19 Vaccination Series Required.

Application: Will be reviewed until December 1 with preference given to scramble graduates. 

Prerequisite: Being a Scrambling Course graduate or equivalent (with a badge in your profile) is a prerequisite for this course. If you don't have that badge because you still need to complete First Aid or another piece of the Scrambling Course then you'll be considered if there's still space remaining. If you haven't taken the Scrambling Course but have significant scrambling experience outside of the Mountaineers then you'll be considered if there's still space remaining. Another method to obtain a Scrambling Course graduate badge is to apply for Scrambling Course Equivalency, contact your branch's Scrambling Committee for more information about equivalency.

Course description: This course is the glacier component of the Basic Alpine Climbing Course. You'll learn to travel safely on glaciers while roped up, and you'll learn technical skills such as crevasse rescue and rappelling. In addition to the workshops, practices and field trips listed below, there are a few field trips you'll be doing out in the mountains on snow and ice. Students and graduates of this course are able to sign up for Basic Glacier climbs just like graduates of the Basic Alpine Climbing Course.

Application process: Everyone needs to fill out an application and have it approved before being accepted into the Glacier Course. Just click the "Apply" button on this page to fill out the application. After your application has been reviewed you'll be notified via email, and then you'll be able to sign up and pay for the course.

All applications received between Oct. 21 and Dec 1st will be reviewed at the same time at the end of December. The order which applications are received does not matter.
