Top-roping Water Ice - 2020

Climbing Course

Top-Roping Water Ice Course

Learn efficient and safe movement on vertical ice while on top rope.

Explore the world of water ice climbing! This is a single-pitch course that will cover the techniques needed for safe and efficient movement on vertical ice.  In order to focus on your technique, you will be protected by a top rope while climbing. The majority of instruction occurs during a multiday trip to one of several out-of-state locations known for reliable ice climbing. By the end of this course, students will successfully demonstrate excellent technique for climbing in the water ice environment (typically WI4).

This year, there will be two course sessions in Ouray Colorado. The course will include 3 consecutive days of climbing at the park. The sessions will be either Jan 8-12 or Jan 15-19. Course fees include the cost of 4 nights of shared accommodation and permits, but not transportation, food and other expense.

Roster
Required Equipment

We will cover gear recommendations during the first session at the Mountaineers. If you do not already have the gear, and wish to purchase it, expect to spend $500 to $1500 retail.  Do not buy anything in advance of course acceptance notices.  Basic gear includes:

- 2 technical tools

- steel crampons (vertical or horizontal points)

- stiff soled mountaineering boots appropriate for ice climbing

- proper layering systems and  gloves for ice climbing

- personal gear including helmet and harness

Depending on the location of the course, you may be able to rent tools and crampons at local stores. This is a good option if you want to try out different tools before purchasing and can make travel somewhat easier. You must pack ice tools and crampons in checked luggage on commercial flights.
