Field trip: Waterfall Canyoning Course

Personal Movement in Water - Group A - Snoqualmie River: Powerhouse to Plum Landing

Learn the dynamics of whitewater and how to assist others in hydraulic and other water obstacles

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 1.0 mi

You'll discuss on day 2 the meeting place and time for day 3. However, generally plan for an 8-6 day.

Whitewater poses a unique hazard in aquatic canyons, requiring knowledge of ways to move through current, identifying obstacles such as hydraulics, and managing ropes and rigging safely for whitewater. On day 3 of the course, students will learn the characteristics of water hazards and gain an ability to assess whether a canyon's conditions is within their skill set. Students will also practice movement through current, partner assistance, diving, swimming release, and managing heat and cold injury.

All equipment is provided for use during the course. However, if you have your own helmet, whistle, wetsuit, canyon shoes, or canyon-specific descender that you would like to use, let the instructor know in advance.

The whitewater day will be the first day in wet suits. Arrive prepared to put your wet suit on (we recommend wearing a bathing suit). Bring a towel and clothes for the drive home.
