Scramble Instructor Review - Snow Skills - Snoqualmie Summit Ski Areas

Review of scrambling snow skills, primarily intended for Seattle Scramble Instructors. We will spend about half a day up at the Summit West ski area in Snoqualmie Pass (now closed for the season) so that we can get on actual snow!

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 1.0
  • Elevation Gain: 800 ft

Date: Saturday, April 6, 2019.
Time: we will meet at 8:45 am and start up the slopes at 9:00.
Place: although we will be practicing at Summit West (Exit 52, eastbound I-90), the multiplicity of parking lots below the slopes typically leads to confusion; we will instead meet at the WSDOT convenience facility Travelers Rest (half the building is the WSDOT restrooms; half is a small tourist shop).  Take the same exit, turn right at the bottom of the ramp, and follow the ski area/service road a half mile or so, past a gas station and convenience store, and find Travelers Rest on your left (roughly across the road from Dru Brew and Commonwealth restaurant).

This clinic is a review of snow skills, primarily intended for Seattle Scramble Instructors. We will cover the same content as the Scramble Snow Field Trip, including snow travel (walking in balance, kicking steps, plunge step, etc), ice axe self belay, and ice axe self arrest. We will also discuss typical places where students get stuck, and different teaching strategies to help them get these critical skills down.

Bring your usual snow scramble gear, including rain-resistant outer clothing for practicing down on the snow.  Gaiters highly recommended.  Crampons suggested, though crampon work  will not be the main focus of the day (see my May 4 2019 clinic for a crampon-focused event!).
