Objective: Practice steep snow travel skills, proper use of an ice axe, crampons and emergency bivouac
What to Expect:
Practice walking in-balance with crampons and glissading using your ice axe, on steep snow
Practice each self-arrest position with both hands, on steep snow
Practice an emergency bivouac set-up, in snow
Review of basic avalanche safety and terrain awareness

Chapter 16 – Snow Travel and Climbing: pages 330-353; 360-365
Note: we teach the self-arrest grasp, primarily – figure 16-14.a.

Required Equipment
10 essentials, ice axe and helmet.
Scramble pack, including 10 essentials and required scramble gear.
Clothing appropriate for practicing self-arrest outdoors (i.e. rain pants and rain jacket).
Extra gloves, to replace if/when yours get wet.
Clothes in the car to change in to at end of outing.
