Rock Scrambling

Field trip: Compressed Alpine Scrambling Course

Rock Scrambling - Mount Erie

Pod N: This is the Rock Field Trip for the 2021 Seattle Compressed Alpine Scramble Course.

  • Moderate

Meeting Place: TBD.  Driving time from Seattle is typically about 1.5 hours or a little less.
Meeting Time: 8:00 a.m. to gear up for a start time of 8:15.   The day will be spent partly on-trail, partly off-trail, and with a focus on practicing scramble rock skills on short but steep rock faces (and one longer, moderately steep face that will be protected by ropes and anchors to practice use of the emergency down-climbing kit).  The rock skills can be challenging for some; the day is otherwise only modestly strenuous.  On rare occasions in the past, participants have found a tick that needed to be removed (the quicker the better, so we will be checking alertly but not obsessively throughout the day and especially at the end of the day when changing clothes, during your shower after you get home, etc.).  Illness has not proven to be a concern if the ticks are removed promptly.  If you are even moderately concerned, please bring bug juice/spray.
Gear: All usual scramble gear, including ice ax, mountain boots, helmets, full pack, and emergency descent kit.  We will be on the south and west sides of the mountain with lots of potential sun exposure.
Further details: Additional info about directions and the meeting place will be provided in an update to this listing.  Any other needed info will be provided to students in an email from the instructors during the week before the activity.
