Tiger Mountain Field Trip

Field trip: Compressed Alpine Scrambling Course

Tiger Mountain Field Trip - West Tiger Mountain No. 3

The Tiger Mt. Field trip for Seattle Compressed Alpine Scrambling Course B: this is one of two alternate dates we might end up using, so please also hold Saturday, May 7, 2022 open on your calendar until a final decision is made between the two dates.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,100 ft

We will make a decision between the two alternate dates well ahead of time and notify you by email.

Additional details about this Conditioning Hike will be forthcoming in an email sometime the week before the activity, including information about the exact trail and trail-head that will be used.

Meeting Time:  We will start moving at 8:00 a.m., so please arrive about 15 minutes earlier to give you time to boot up and go through a short introduction, gear check, and route/Covid protocol discussion.

We will meet at the designated trail head to get organized, but will then break up into groups of 6-8 students and a pair of instructors for small group instruction.  This trip is  a hike for scramble course students to work on their conditioning, preview navigation and ice ax skills, explore the foothills peaks, and become better acquainted with the other students and scramble community members. We will use this time to get to know fellow scramblers, discuss the course, and get ready for a summer of peak-bagging! These conditioners are also a great way to test out your gear in the field. Expect a 7-8 hour day.

This trip is not a scramble and does not count toward graduation. Each student must do one conditioning trip that is listed with the course, and we strongly encourage you to sign up for hikes and other conditioning activities with the Mountaineers.

Depending on our ability to recruit leaders for these hikes, there might be more than one hike listed per day.

Destinations might include:

  • West Tiger 3 via any of a myriad of trails
  • Others TBD at the discretion of the lead instructor.

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

This is not a scramble, so helmets, ice axes and harnesses are not required however for conditioning you should carry all the gear you will be taking on a scramble trip. This includes helmet, ice axe and hasty harness.

Everything else you would bring on a regular scramble course is required including the 10 essentials, rain gear and extra clothes.

This is a great time to test out mountaineering boots you are planning to use during the scramble course for fit and comfort. If you do not have those boots yet sturdy hiking boots will suffice for now.
