Field trip: Alpine Scrambling Equivalency

Rock and Snow Skills Test - Freedom Peak

A one-day scramble up a mountain with steep snow and steep rock to test rock travel and snow travel skills for people applying for Scramble equivalency.

  • Technical 2
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft
  • Pace: Moderate

TBD at Stafford Creek TH, NW Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass required.

A day in the beautiful Teanaway to practice and demonstrate off trail scramble skills, including navigation, snow skills (kicking steps, walking in balance, self belay, self arrest and glissade techiniques), and rock skills (scree, talus, boulders), as well as learn and practice  protected down-climb technique utilizing either a prusik or a klemheist hitch.  Expect a full day of fun, maybe not a summit, but an opportunity to learn more about the  Mountaineers and our scrambling program as well.  If we have two leaders, I will plan to increase group size to a total of 8.
