Crosscut Sawyer Recertification class for the Olympia Branch of The Mountaineers wanting to meet the US Forest Service - National Saw Standards and join the Olympia Branch as a sawyer in clearing trails in the Olympic National Forest and elsewhere. Final site selection and course details will be determined in cooperation with the staff of the Olympic National Forest.

  • Challenging

Meeting at 9:00 a.m. in the Hoodsport vicinity.  Final site selection and times will be determined in cooperation with the staff of the Olympic National Forest. 

This Recertification course will begin with a review and practical skill assessment of basic Crosscut Saw use; safety awareness and actual practice; saw site preparation; Bucking skills and practical crew teamwork. The session will also include best practices for problem solving discussions and application of more technical logout skills including; binds, compression and tension, pivot points, spring poles, falling or rolling root mass and the decision making process to walking away from a project.

The instruction will be provided by staff from the Olympic National Forest, Quilcene Ranger District.  The course content is being arranged to be as reasonably close as possible to meet the Olympia Branch certified sawyers requests and needs. Final course content will be determined in cooperation with the staff of the Olympic National Forest.

Students will need to dress for the weather, wear required PPE, hard hat, work gloves, eye protection, work boots or (high top) hiking boots, carry a day pack with essentials.  

Tools, helmets work gloves and eye protection can be provided upon request.
