PREREQUISITES:

Participants must be able to competently top-rope multiple  5.9  routes in one gym session without taking breaks or hanging on the belay while climbing. Climbing fitness is important as the class culminates outside where climbing is typically harder and risk is higher. Participants should also be able  to top-rope belay competently.  Questions? COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Introduction to Leading Bolted Routes Course is a program of classroom instruction designed to equip participants with the fundamental technical skills and experience necessary to safely lead climb well bolted single pitch routes. 

INSTRUCTION TOPICS:

  • Lead belaying/cleaning/equipment
  • Clipping  techniques
  • Route risk assessment
  • Face climbing techniques
  • Leading a route
  • Falling

EQUIPMENT: 

Please bring the equipment specified in the Required Equipment section to all activities for this course after the Friday, Sep 6, 2019 climbing night.

Required Equipment
      • Belay device (Gri Gri "3", Gri Gri 2 (not in production anymore), Mega Jul, Giga Jul, ATC Guide, or ATC); watch the videos produced by the manufacturers for proper use.
      • Harness with belay loop and gear loops
      • Helmet
      • Personal Anchor (Metolius PAS, CAMP Swing Lanyard, Petzl Connect Adjust; there are others, learn how to use them properly)
      • Rock Shoes
      • Chalk bag
      • 8 locking carabiners (6 low profile and 2 large pear shaped preferred AKA HMS)
        • Breakdown: 4 low profile carabiners for making a top-rope anchor, 2 low profile for your PAS, 1 large pear for your belay device, and 1 extra large pear
      • 20 ft. of 7mm accessory cord (For Top-Rope Anchor)
      • (optional) Autoblock (hollow block or prusik cord)
  • (optional) 60 or 70 meter single dynamic rope
  • (optional) 6-12 quick draws
  • (optional) rope bag

If you do not have all of the gear by Sept. 10, 2019, that is fine, we will discuss gear options.
