Introduction to Leading Bolted Routes - Olympia Course

Learn to lead and clean single pitch bolted sport climbs in two classroom-based interactive lectures, two practice sessions, and a culminating trip to classic northwest climbing destination.

 Course dates:

Tuesday, Aug. 29 (6-9PM)-  Classroom, Lacey Community Center Banquet Hall A
Thursday, Sept. 7 (6-9PM)-  Tacoma wall, Mountaineers Tacoma Branch
Tuesday, Sept. 12 (6-9PM)- Classroom, Lacey Community Center Banquet Hall A
Sunday, Sept. 24 (8-4PM)- Tacoma wall, Mountaineers Tacoma Branch
Saturday Sept. 30, (7am - 5pm) - Smith Rock State Park - meet near bathrooms and yurt in main parking lot. Parking is $5 per day per vehicle. Debit cards and credit cards accepted onsite for parking.

 

Preference given to Olympia Basic Climbing graduates. Contact the course leader on or after 7/24/17 to register. Open registration begins 8/14/17.

Course Description: 

The Introduction to Leading Bolted Routes Course is a program of classroom instruction designed to equip students with the fundamental technical skills and experience necessary to safely lead climb well bolted single pitch routes. 

Instruction Topics:

  • Belaying/rappelling/cleaning/equipment
  • Clipping  techniques
  • Route risk assessment
  • Face climbing techniques
  • Leading a route

This course has no scheduled activities.

Roster
Required Equipment
      • If you do not have everything the first night, that is fine, we will discuss gear options.
      • Belay device (Gri Gri 2, Gri Gri Plus, Mega Jul, ATC Guide, or ATC); watch the videos produced by the manufacturers for proper use
      • Harness with belay loop and gear loops
      • Helmet
      • Personal Anchor (Metolius PAS is a good one; there are others, learn how to use them properly)
      • Rock Shoes
      • Chalk bag
      • Autoblock (hollow block or prusik cord)
      • 8 locking carabiners (6 low profile and 2 pear shaped preferred)
      • 20 ft. of 7mm accessory cord
  • (optional) 60 meter single dynamic rope
  • (optional) quick draws
  • (optional) rope bag
