Lead Climbing Clinic


Lead Climbing Clinic - Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center

This will be a snow clinic to practice and refresh the various skills needed for snow/glacier travel. Participants should have previous knowledge and training along with the requisite equipment. It is not the intent of the clinic for it to be an introduction to snow/glacier travel. Current and past climbing students are welcome.

  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)

Meet at the ONP ranger station at the entrance road to Hurricane Ridge so we are ready to drive to the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center when the the gates open at 9:00 AM.  Be sure to bring your park pass if you have one and tire chains if still required for entry.  Departure is whenever you want. 

This clinic will target past and present Basic and Intermediate climbers.  Items to be covered will be based on the areas that the participants  want to refresh their knowledge and skills such as:

  • Avalanche beacon use
  • Snow travel unroped
  • Snow travel roped
  • Self belay
  • Self arrest
  • Snow tests
  • Crevasse rescue

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

Bring your pack with the gear that would be used for a typical day's travel on snow and glacier including: helmet, climbing harness with appropriate items, glacier glasses, ice axe, picket, shovel, crampons, snow shoes, beacon and probe (if you have), etc.

Kitsap branch will bring their ropes, beacons, probes, snow saws, and shovels.
