Field trip to teach and practice climbing skills to prepare students to start to lead single and multi-pitch trad climbs. Part ground school, part climbing. Initial discussions will address rappel methods, anchor building, and other fundamental skills for leading on rock.
McCleary Cliffs parking area at Lake Cushman 8 am.

Required Equipment
Helmet, harness and climbing shoes.
Belay device. Self-braking belay device like Black Diamond ATC Guide or Petzl Reverso
Bring the protection you have. You will have the opportunity to use available equipment to determine which types you want to purchase for yourself.
6 straight gate carabiners

Dress for winter weather (e.g. fleece or puffy jacket, rain jacket and full-zip rain pants)
You will need to purchase a cordelette if you do not already have one. Do not buy any other gear for this field trip. Cordelette will be 17 to 22 feet and made from 5 to 7 mm cord. Tech cord 5 or 5.5 mm is nice. 6 or 7mm perlon is fine also.
A cordelette is a length of cordage, 6 meters (20 feet) or so in length. Typically it’s made of one of these two materials: 7mm perlon or 5.5mm spectra. Spectra is more expensive but lighter, especially when wet.
