New Hike-Backpack-Urban Walk Leader Seminar

New Hike-Backpack-Urban Walk Leader Seminar

ZOOM SEMINAR WITH INTERACTIVE GROUP DISCUSSION! This 2.5 hour evening seminar is designed for experienced Mountaineers hikers, urban walkers or backpackers to provide information and practice in a 'safe space' to help you get certified and be successful as a hike, urban walk or backpack leader for the Mountaineers. This seminar is a pre-requisite (along with a mentor hike/backpack, appropriate navigation and first aid training/experience, and committee approval) to becoming an official hike or backpack leader for the club, and prospective leaders from any branch can get credit for this seminar toward their leader certification.

NOTE:  This seminar is best for people who have already participated in at least two Mountaineers hikes, backpacks or urban walks and are interested in taking the next step to lead  group hikes, backpacks or urban walks for the Mountaineers.  People with outdoor group leadership experience outside the Mountaineers are also welcome but you will need to participate in at least 2-3 Mountaineers group hikes, backpacks or urban walks to be certified as a Mountaineers leader.

This 2.5 hour evening course provides experienced Mountaineers hikers, urban walkers or backpackers information they need to become an effective hike or backpack leader for the Mountaineers. This course is a pre-requisite (along with a mentor hike/backpack, navigation and first aid training and committee approval) to becoming an official hike, urban walk or backpack leader for the club.  (Read more about the definitions of a Mountaineers hike, backpack or urban walk and the requirements and steps to become a leader of any of these activities for the Mountaineers here!) Past and current hike, urban walk or backpack leaders as well as those interested in becoming a new leader are invited to participate. The workshop is free and open to all Mountaineers members, but please register online so we can schedule the right number of instructors.  Leader permission is requested so that we can have a brief conversation about your interests and the fit of this seminar for you at this time.

Seminar objectives:

  • Know the kinds of trips you want to lead, and how to attract participants who have the same interests and capabilities.
  • Understand and be prepared to carry out the roles and expectations of a hike, urban walk or backpack leader for the Mountaineers.
  • Be prepared and confident to handle common challenges you will encounter leading groups on the trail.
  • Be ready to take the next steps to become a hike, urban walk or backpack leader for the Mountaineers.
A major part of the session is built around interactive small-group exercises with experienced Mountaineers leaders to help you prepare to handle common leadership decision-making challenges from real-life leader experiences.   Some pre-reading is also required.
