8:30am at the Longmire parking lot. We will get the requisite permit and wait for the gate on the road to Paradise to open.

For this field trip, we will travel with skis.  (Snowshoers, please see our other field trip.)

  • site selection
  • how to set up a winter camp
  • cooking food
  • gathering water
  • ski-specific aspects of winter camping
  • building an emergency snow shelter

In addition to our hands-on learning activities, we will engage in a group activity:  skiing in the Paradise area.

  • Skis or split-board for backcountry touring with skins
  • Overnight pack - approximately 50L in capacity
  • Insulated sleeping pad
  • Sleeping bag rated for colder temperatures
  • Shovel, probe, beacon
  • your food, snacks for the weekend plus personal items and medications
  • Extra layers and a change of gloves is highly recommended
  • Foam pad to use with shelter
