Basic Snowshoeing Equivalency - Foothills - 2017-18

Snowshoeing Course

Basic Snowshoeing Equivalency

This course is for granting Basic Snowshoeing equivalency to those who have previous training and basic snowshoeing experience.

Equivalency allows members with appropriate levels of previous training and experience to bypass the Basic Snowshoeing course.

The process involves

  1. An application that provides details on your snowshoeing experience.
  2. An email or phone conversation to discuss your application and experience.
  3. Registration and payment.
  4. Assist as a gear demo instructor at a Foothills Basic Snowshoeing Lecture.
  5. Assist as an instructor at one Foothills Basic Snowshoeing Field Trip. This is a weekend day trip on a Saturday or Sunday at Commonwealth Basin (Snoqualmie Pass).

Members applying for equivalency will be paired up with an experienced instructor, which allows for individual attention and mentoring through this process. The process can take a few weeks depending on volunteer availability to review an application, schedule and conduct an interview, schedule an assistant instructor spot, review and submit a recommendation to the snowshoe program.

To apply for equivalency, locate the "Go to application" link found in the "Register Participant" section, on the right side of this page. Complete the online application to provide details of your snowshoeing experience and avalanche safety education.

By selecting Foothills as your home branch, your application will be forwarded to the Foothills snowshoeing program for response.

In addition, you will need to attend the Avalanche Awareness course, a free 90-minute seminar that is an introduction to understanding and avoiding avalanches. It can be taken either before or after applying, but the Avalanche Awareness course must be completed before equivalency can be granted.
