Check-in time will be 9AM on Saturday January 17.  Please plan to arrive, park, and have your gear and pack assembled and be at the registration spot by 9:00 a.m.We will gather along road that fronts the Mountaineers backcountry “Snoqualmie Campus,” located at Snoqualmie Pass and adjacent to The Summit at Snoqualmie ski area.  Additional details and more specific parking instructions will follow. 

Hot coffee and tea and breakfast snacks will be there awaiting you, along with a registration table.  

Don’t schedule anything time sensitive for afterward.  Expected field trip completion time is 3 p.m.

This course is designed for those with no or little experience who want to learn basics of snowshoeing. Whether you are new to snow sports, want to have fun in the winter outdoors or yearn to take winter hikes, this is the course to get you started on your winter adventure.  

In this field session you will learn and practice the basics: basic balance, maneuvering on snowshoes, going up hill, side-hill and handling downhills.

There will be two field trips offered, on the 17th and the 25th.  Each day will involve a 3-4 mile guided roundtrip; with a few hundred feet elevation gain, as well as other learning activities.  Students only need to sign up for one field trip.  We have sufficient instructors to help with both days, but do ask that students try to help evenly balance out the attendance between the two dates when signing-up.

In order to get the most benefit out of the field trip, you should do the following:

  • Prepare for the field trip. Review lecture material, reading material and handouts that will be provided.
  • Check and recheck your gear and pack.  Especially if you forget to bring your snowshoes, it’s going to make for an unsatisfying day.  (I have led a snowshoe trip and it happened)
  • Be prepared for any combination of weather conditions at the field trip and on the drive up to the pass if you will be driving.  Don’t schedule anything time sensitive for afterward.  Expected field trip completion time is 3-4 p.m.
  • Arrive early enough to park and make whatever preparations are necessary so we can be ready to begin as close to the 8:00 starting time as possible.

It is highly recommended that all field trip participants try to carpool.  Carpooling will be very important for this field trip.  Our snowshoeing group will be sharing the “staging area” with other students who will be using this same club property those days for a Foothills Avalanche Training course that will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The park & ride locations off Exit 15 in Issaquah (the Issaquah Transit Center or the Tibbits Lot) are excellent meet-up spots for car pooling to the pass.  Instructions for finding a good carpool for your needs can be found at https://www.mountaineers.org/explore/good-carpooling-practices
