The new Wilderness Navigation curriculum requires that instructors have their GPS Badge. This activity provides instructors a method to obtain their Basic GPS Badge, at no charge,  prior to the course In-Person Workshop and Field Trips. 

For instructors to receive their badge, they must complete the online module as well as instruct, or participate as an Assistant Instructor at one In-Person Workshop AND one Field Trip. The online module must be completed prior to the Workshop and Field Trip

To sign up:

Sign up as a Wilderness Navigation course instructor then sign up for the online module listed as an activity under the Wilderness Navigation Instructor Training. There is no charge for instructor training.   

This course activities requires you to have a Smartphone.  You will be instructed to install Gaia GPS App at no cost using your member benefits.

You are allotted 8 weeks to finish this activity. If you cannot finish in that time, please contact the Wilderness Navigation course lead.

Online Module:

 The GPS Online Module is an online review of the GPS system and tools.  It includes practical exercises with Gaia GPS and other tools. It takes approximately 4 to 5 hours to complete this activity. 

On the start date, you'll receive an email with a link to the material.  A volunteer instructor will be assigned to help you, to answer questions, etc.   You may work the modules in any order and  you must complete the quizzes to be deemed complete.

Required Equipment:

We have standardized on the use of a Smartphone with Gaia GPS.  If you use any other device or app, it is up to you to understand its operation related to on-screen mapping, along with making and using tracks, routes, and waypoints.
